To charter a sailing yacht and steer it safely, you should have at least one sailing season of experience as a skipper on a similar sized yacht in an area with similar conditions.
What you need to know to charter a yacht
If you want to charter a sailing yacht, you should have at least two sailors in your crew who are competent and experienced. Of course, not every member of your crew needs to have sailing experience, but it is important that at least a few people on board know what they are doing.
Before you head out to sea, make sure you have at least (!) the following skills and are ready to demonstrate them when needed:
Whether you want to charter a sailboat or a motorboat: You should definitely have experience skippering a crew for a period of at least 48 hours. Safe anchoring and mooring as well as obtaining and interpreting weather forecasts are also important skills you should have for chartering a sailing yacht. Navigating with the help of a nautical chart and a compass is of course also part of it. You also need to know the basic safety measures for your chartered boat. It is also important to understand how to handle the boat’s engine in a confined space – as well as the systems on board, such as navigation equipment, engine and toilet/galley facilities.
Instructing and guiding non-sailors and sailors with little experience should also be part of your skillset if you want to charter a sailing yacht. And last but not least, you should enjoy sailing!
